“Sailing with Humpback Whales”
The Dredging barge and it’s pipe was deeply centered in the marina channel as we passed 2 large Vallarta Adventures tour boats and exited the marina smoothly with a minimum 9.1 ft depth, about 1 hour before a very low tide. After raising the main and then opening the headsail, we started sailing smoothly on a port side tack but after we saw some whales to our left, we turned and pointed towards downtown Puerto Vallarta on a comfortably faster starboard tack.
The sailing today was wonderful! We were so lucky as we sailed into the beautiful sunset and encountered numerous humpback whales, both near and far. Before we got too close to Puerto Vallarta (where we would lose our wind), we turned Hooligan around and headed back out West. We did see 2 dolphins that zoomed across our path, but unfortunately they didn’t want to play with us.
Just before the very beautiful sunset, the headsail rolled up crisp and smoothly. Engine was started at 6:45pm and after bringing down the mainsail, we motored up to 2500 RPM for approximately 30 minutes before docking at 7:15pm in Hooligan’s home, slip B-3 at the Paradise Village Marina. Thanks so much to LonSellsYachts.com and some other dock mates who caught a couple of lines as we came in 🙂
Overall it was an awesome day, and a Happy Birthday Pete! Safe travels to the family, I hope they will come back again soon!
Capitán Gamberro, signing off of another great day of sailing with humpback whales.
